The poetic ear

Tuned to the concealed and captive

And the hymns of the wider realm

Listens well

Interceding on our soul’s behalf

The poetic ear

When given permission

Partners with layers of experience

That accompany the telling of grander myths

Making known the meaning

Way before it is understood

And this sonic annunciation

These life-giving phrases

These homilies and hymns

The language so often orphaned in our age

Deliver a seed of lyrical sentiment

A rare miracle conceived for the world

Where image leaves our dreams

And escapes the unexpressed

These wordsmiths

These “how to listen” guides

Point us to the song and vibrancy around words

And tell us over and over again

When we are surrendered to uncertainties

The poetic hearing finds it’s calling

In the remembering and re-collecting

In the gathering up of countless lost storylines

Dangling in the forgotten or submerged

So, the miracle of the poetic ear

Plays itself out day after day

In our seemingly ordinary hearing

And when we are freed

Of the demands of calculation and cunning

Willing to receive in wonder

Our hearing is made alive

Within the deepest sounding of the soul
